Overcoming The Holiday Blues

Share Post:

We are in the season of the holidays. I know it is October, but if you walk into any store you are likely to see Christmas decorations.

Although the holiday season is a festive and joyous time for some, it can be a painful and isolating time for others.

If you are reading this article, I want you to have some quick tips on how to overcome such feelings or how to help someone you love to overcome feelings of sadness.

Here are a few things you can do (or sugguest to someone who may be in need of these tips):

  1. Find something to be grateful for: Gratefulness is one of the best solutions to combat feeling a bit down.
  2. Create your atmosphere: If you are triggered by the sight of holiday lights for example, associate it with something else like red light green light ( a common fun game in childhood), or the movie star wars. Re-associating things that cause triggers can help create new positive association and lessen the feeling of sadness.
  3. Turn off the TV!: Choose your own program schedule of things to watch or find other ways to entertain your self. With streaming online an TV apps you can control what you view and avoid thins that make you sad like sappy holiday movies.
  4. Let the light in! : Studies show that exposure to sunlight helps reduce sadness and feeling down. be sure to open the blinds or curtains daily to let in the sunlight. Also, step outside into the sunshine for a few moments and breathe in the fresh air.
  5. Reconnect to things that you love to do: do you like to draw, sing, dance, bake, build? Take the time to reconnect to hobbies that bring you joy. Shake things up by trying something new.
  6. If a situation feels too overwhelming to handle on your own it is ok to seek professional council. There is no shame in asking for help or seeking the help of a licensed clinical professional.

You have the power to create change in your life!
